The day after Walk to Mary\, join the National Shrine of Our Lady of Champion as it celebrates its time-honored tradition of crowning Mary as Queen of heaven and earth. Following Mary’s crowning\, be sure to participate in the National Shrine’s traditional rosary procession around its grounds! \nMay Crowning Mass – 11:30 am \nRosary Procession – Following Mass \n____________________________________ \nInformation on the May Crowning Tradition:\n“May Crowning” is a Catholic devotion that occurs in the month of May\, recognizing recognizes Mary as Queen of heaven and earth. As May is considered the season of the beginning of new life\, we participate in Mary’s crowning to recognize her role in Our Lord lifting us out of the long\, cold days of winter and firmly planting our hearts in the warm and promising soil of spring. \nThe act of crowning is attributing a queen symbol to Mary\, the mother of our Lord\, Jesus Christ. The event is of particular significance as it relates to the National Shrine’s history. When Our Lady appeared in 1859 to the young Belgian immigrant woman\, Adele Brise\, she identified herself as the “Queen of Heaven.” \n
